How to avoid an auto accident: Safe Driving

Often as personal injury lawyers, we see many accidents and are asked by our clients what could have been done differently to avoid the accident .  We put together a short list of things you can do to help you and your loved ones to avoid accidents.

1. Be attentive.  While this sounds obvious many times, we find ourselves distracted on the everyday monotonous commute to and from work.  It can sometimes be very tempting to look at that incoming text, change the song on your phone, or finish eating breakfast.  These are the times where you’ll fail to notice another driver merging into your lane and accidents happen.

2. Obey all speed limits and signs.  Again, another obvious rule but sometimes we forget their importance when running late.  Too many times people are too eager to make it through a fading yellow light or an inconvenient stop sign and ignore them.  It only takes a split second poor decision to put yourself in a bad situation.

3. Don’t rely on other drivers to keep you safe.  You’ve probably thought on the last two tips about how easy it is to keep those and avoid accidents.  This tip is more difficult as it requires you to watch other drivers.  Too many times we expect others to follow all the rules only to be disappointed when they don’t and hit our cars.  Expecting other drivers to not take your best interests in mind can help you stay prepared for when they inevitably make poor driving decisions.
