Four Problems if you don’t buy Auto Insurance
1. The most obvious problem is that if you have an auto accident you do not have coverage. Your auto insurance protects your assets with liability coverage in the event of an auto accident where you are at fault. It also provides you important medical pay and loss of wage payments under the no fault provisions, even if the auto accident is your fault.
2. There are two other not so obvious problems if you do not have auto insurance. If you have an auto accident without auto insurance of course you will get a ticket for driving without insurance. What you may not know is that the event will be reported to the State and they will revoke your license until you can prove you have current insurance and resolved liability issues.
3. In addition if you have an auto accident without insurance the law restricts your ability to recover in a court of law. You can only get paid for economic damages, nothing for pain and suffering, even though the accident is the other drivers fault. There are some exceptions so be sure to consult a lawyer if you get into this situation.
4. Finally and perhaps most important, you are really insuring yourself and your family. If the other driver is at fault and only has minimum policy limits you can make a claim against your own policy for the excess. This is called underinsured motorist coverage. If the driver at fault is uninsured you can recovery under your own policy, this is called uninsured motorist coverage. This get very complicated so be sure to give us a call.
